ARICA for Autism – Insurance

There is a Massachusetts Law, ARICA, that requires health insurers in Massachusetts to provide coverage for the diagnosis and treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Autism Housing Pathways will present a full day workshop on housing on Friday, July 31st, at Community Resources for People with Autism, 116 Pleasant St., Suite 366, Easthampton.

Would you or someone you know like to be a “Fitness Peer Buddy” to an individual with special needs? We have an opportunity for you!
AND – You’ll have access to the JCC Gym, Pool and Fitness Center during this 3-month period!
We are recruiting volunteers – Fitness Peer Buddies – to work out at the JCC with individuals with special needs through our Fitness Buddies Program.

Study Reveals Senses of Sight and Sound Separated in Children with Autism

A recent post in “Research News at Vanderbilt” describes recent research on how “children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) have trouble integrating simultaneous information from their eyes and their ears.” Read about the research of Dr. Mark Wallace and Dr. Stephen Camarata, who describe that if this deficit in early sensory function can be “fixed” then we may be able to see benefits in language and communication and social interactions for individuals with autism.

It’s not too late! Sign up for August Kehillah Camps now!

It may be the middle of July, but we still have two GREAT Camping Opportunities for Special Needs campers, right here at the Springfield JCC: JCC Inclusion Camp & Camp Kehillah Special Needs Camp. The Inclusion Camp, during the weeks of August 5-9 and August 12-16, is designed for campers who have had success with partial or full inclusion with shared support. Camp Kehillah our substantially separate camp, runs the week prior to school starting, August 19 – 23. This camp is for all campers with special needs, but will work well for those campers who need extra support. Learn more and register now! We hope to see you at camp!
